Joseph A. “Joe” Goerdt

Joseph A. “Joe” Goerdt, age 77 of Melrose, died after a courageous battle with cancer on Sunday, June 21, 2015, in Sauk Centre.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday, June 26 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Military honors were by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard immediately following the service and inurnment will be at a later date at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Joseph Albert Goerdt
was born June 3, 1938, in Brooten to Anthony
Sr. and Loretta (Weimerskirch) Goerdt.
He served in the United States Army. On July 1, 1961, he married
Marian Gieske at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose. Joe installed flooring for many years and then started driving truck as an owner/operator, and was leased to Hensley Trucking until retiring in 2012. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and Schanhaar-Otte VFW Post 7050 where he served on the drill team for many years.

Joe enjoyed camping with his family and friends and going up north working the land, planting trees, and deer hunting. He learned and later taught himself the art of wood turning. He was excellent at designing and building things made of wood and metal like tree planters, farm equipment, RV campers, and fish houses to name a few. 

 Survivors include his wife, Marian Goerdt
of Melrose; children, Shelly (Jim) Hoppe of New Munich, Steve (Lisa) Goerdt of Melrose, and Dan Goerdt
 of Green Bay, Wisc.; ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; sisters, Edwina Dehler of St. Cloud, Evelyn (Ferdie)
Stepan of Sauk Centre, Anita Eskelund of Scottsdale, Ariz., Rose (Sylvester) Uphus of Sauk Centre, Marilyn
(Fritz) Uphus of Greenwald, Ruth Ann (Jim) Gieske of Melrose, and Louise Echola of St. Cloud; brother,
Julian “Sonny” (Audrie)
Goerdt of Sauk Centre; and sister-in-law, Evelyn Goerdt of Sauk Centre.

 Joe was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, Robert Goerdt; brothers, Anthony Goerdt
Jr. and Roger Goerdt; sisters, Ione Kukla and Barb Spellerberg; brothers-in-law, Herb Dehler,
Lloyd Eskelund, Rick Echola, Bob Kukla, and Bill Spellerberg.

Serving as urn bearers were Cooper Goerdt, Gary Moorman, Duane Duevel, Dan Stepan, and Maurice Stepan. Cross bearer was Jessica
Rosten and scripture bearer was Meg Goerdt.

Herbert T. Bertram

Herbert T. Bertram, age 61, of Maple Grove, Minn., passed away June 29, 2015. Herb was born April 11, 1954, in Melrose to the late Nick and
Hilda (Wuertz) Bertram. He is survived by daughter, Jennifer (Jeff) Berhow; sons, Thomas (Emilie) and Nathan; grandchildren, Ethan, Wyatt, Jenna, Jackson, Cole,  and Clara; brothers and sisters; other relatives and friends.

Herb owned and operated Bertram Building and Remodeling Inc. for over 40 years.  He had a passion for his work, the outdoors, and above all, his family.  

Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was Monday, July 6 at 11 a.m. at the Church of St. Joseph the Worker, 7180 Hemlock Lane, Maple Grove. Visitation was Sunday, July 5, at Gearty-Delmore Funeral Chapel in Plymouth.

Marie Eva Karnes

Marie Eva Karnes, age 90 of Maplewood, formerly of Grey Eagle, passed away peacefully at 4 a.m. on Sunday, July 5, 2015, at her home in Maplewood, Minn. 

 A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 9, at Grey Eagle United Methodist Church in Grey Eagle with Rev. Gary Taylor officiating.  Interment will be in Lakeview Cemetery. 

 Visitation will be held from 12 to 2 p.m. Thursday at the church in Grey Eagle.

 Marie Eva Rosty was born Sept.  26, 1924, in Burtrum, Minn.,  to Thomas and Eva Rosty.  She wed at the age of 17 when she married the love of her life, Laurence Karnes, in 1942, and was married for 71 years until
Laurence passed in 2013. Marie was a caretaker at Ramsey County Hospital for many years, and was a member of the Evangelical Brethren Church of Grey Eagle, Minn., for years. In her free time, Marie liked to garden, read, do puzzles and watch some of her favorite western movies. Marie was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and wife. Marie and Laurence spent their lives together mostly on their farm, north of Grey Eagle, where they raised their four children. Her family and friends will never forget the fond memories spent with her at the cabin in Mora, Minn.,  that she and Laurence owned. Grandchildren recall spending time agate and clam hunting there, near the river.

 Marie was always a loving, passionate woman, and is survived by her sisters, Carrie Mallinger and Barb Emeott; sister-in-law, Marilyn Rosty; three sons, Gary (Linda) Karnes of McGregor, Dale (Laurie) Karnes of Oakhill, and Loren 

(Janet) Karnes of LeSueur; daughter, Lois (Rod) Forsburg of Hammond, Wis.; eight grandchildren, Tammy and Steven Karnes, Travis, Erin, and Jesse Karnes, Heather Sperl, Kristian and Kassandra Karnes; and four great-grandchildren, Katie and Tim, 

McKenna White, and Avianna Karnes.

 Marie was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Eva Rosty; husband, Laurence Eugene Karnes; sisters, Helen Bollig and Darline Jennings; brothers, Carl and Gordon Rosty; and grandson, Jacob Sperl.

 Serving as casket bearers will be Travis, Jesse, Kristian, Kassee, Steven, and Erin Karnes, Heather Sperl, and Tim Schwietz.

Frances M. Sames

Frances M. Sames, age 90 of Melrose, died Tuesday, June 30, 2015, at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday, July 3 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in St. Rosa with Rev. Daniel Walz officiating. A private entombment will be held at a later date at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Freeport. 

Frances Monica Humpolik was born March 7, 1925, in Minneapolis to Francis and Rose (Kohnmuench) Humpolik. She was united in marriage to Robert Sames on Aug.  12, 1946, in Mound, Minn. Since 1951 the couple resided in the Melrose area, for the past 45 years at Birch Lake. She was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in St. Rosa. Fran enjoyed reading, traveling, playing cards, especially bridge and cribbage, and loved spending time with her family and living at the lake.

Survivors include her two daughters, Lee (Jim) Uphoff of Greenwald and Chris Sames (Chuck Ostberg) of Nisswa; two grandchildren, Bruce (Carmen) Uphoff of San Marcos, Calif., and
Kristen Uphoff of Greenwald; great-grandchildren, Michelle Uphoff, Savannah Finken, and Dominic Finken; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Fran was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Sames on Dec. 1, 2004; parents; and grandsons, John Uphoff and Robbie Uphoff. 

Serving as casket bearers were Lee Uphoff,
Jim Uphoff, Chris Sames, Chuck Ostberg, Bruce Uphoff, and Kristen
Uphoff. Cross bearers were Savannah Finken and Michelle Uphoff and scripture bearer was Dominic Finken. Honorary bearers were Lilliana and Luis Diego Calzada R., Carmen Uphoff, and Fran’s Coffee Clutch.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.

Monica B. Frieler

Monica B. Frieler, age 101 of Greenwald, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Tuesday, July 7, 2015, at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Melrose.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 11 at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Greenwald with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Interment was in the parish cemetery.

Monica Bernadine Wensman was born June 29, 1914, in Melrose to Casper and Anna
(Enneking) Wensman. On May 4, 1937, she married Edwin Frieler at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose. The couple farmed near New Munich for 30 years. After retiring from farming, Monica worked at Stearns Manufacturing from 1966 through 1980, and then did custodial work for St. Andrew’s School for 13 years. Monica enjoyed quilting, embroidering, visiting and spending time with family. 

She was a member of St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Greenwald, Christian Women, and St. Andrew’s Catholic United Financial. 

 Survivors include her children, Henry (Diane) Frieler of Maple Grove, Arlene Desombre of Inver Grove Heights, Carol
(Loren) Pemberton of Monticello, Va. (John) Nathe of Meire Grove, Bill (Betty) Frieler
of Greenwald, Sandra
(Allen) Jostock of Crystal, and Kevin (Pat) Frieler of St. Martin; son-in-law, Edmund Hoppe of Blaine; 24 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren, and six great-great grandchildren; sisters and brother, Ann Stocks of Bella Vista, Ariz., Rose Hemple of Edina, Betty Kampsen of St. Paul, and Edwin (Caroline) Wensman of White Bear Lake.

 Monica was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Edwin Frieler on Dec. 5, 1984; infant sons, Tim and Tom Frieler; daughter, Joan Hoppe; brothers and sisters, Leander Wensman, Hildegard Rosen, Ralph Wensman, Julitta Rachey, Irene Donahue and Leona Moscho.

Anthony S. “Tony” Meyer

Anthony S. “Tony” Meyer, age 82 of Swan Lake near Burtrum, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Monday, July 6, 2015, at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 11 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle with Rev. Ronald Dockendorf officiating and with a eulogy being read 5 minutes prior to the Mass. A private inurnment will take place at a later date at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Melrose. Military honors were provided by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.

Anthony Steven Meyer was born Feb. 3, 1933, in Meire Grove to Anton and Ann
(Waldherr) Meyer. He grew up in Grey Eagle and enlisted in the National Guard and later joined the Army. He married Carol in 1957 and they lived in Brooklyn Park for most of their married years. After retiring from H. Brooks and Co., they built a home on Swan Lake in 2007.

Tony was an avid outdoorsman; he loved fishing, hunting, and cooking. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, and always made them a priority in his life. “I am incredibly blessed to have shared so many years with my best friend. He was the one I always leaned on and I am forever grateful for all of the memories we have shared. Love always, Carol.” 

Grateful for having shared his life are his loving wife of 57 years, Carol (Vogel); children, Steve Meyer, Toni (Tim) Baldwin, Scott (Brenda) Meyer, Terry (Shelly) Meyer, and Troy (Deanna)Meyer; grandchildren, Tim (Sarah), Stefanie (Moises), Nicole, Mike, Matt, Amanda, Christopher, Abby, Carolyn, Emily, Kailey, and Layne; great-grandchildren, Riley, Madison, Alex, Elizebeth, Joshua, Sofie, and Lucy; sisters, Rosemary Kalkman, Dorothy Slimmer, Rita Meyer, and Joanne Rutter; and many more family and special friends.

Tony was preceded in death by his daughter, Sandra Kay Meyer;

Pauline E. “Grandma P.” Imdieke

   Pauline E. “Grandma P.” Imdieke, age 99 of Meire Grove, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Friday, July 10, 2015, at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Melrose, Minn.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, July 14, at the St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove with Rev.
Mitchell Bechtold officiating and Rev. Ken Thielman concelebrating. Interment was in the parish cemetery.

Pauline Elizabeth Meyer was born Feb. 6, 1916, in Meire Grove, Minn., to Joseph and Elizabeth (Deters)
Meyer. On May 25, 1937, she married Edward Imdieke at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove.  The couple farmed east of Meire Grove until 1973. They retired and moved to town. She enjoyed quilting, embroidering, baking bread, and was a good cook.

 Pauline was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove, St. Mary’s Society, and Poor Soul’s Society. 

Survivors include her children, Rosalie 

(Herbert) Welle of Melrose, Donna  (Vernon) Athmann of Sauk Centre, Herbert (Darlene) Imdieke of Meire Grove, Margaret (Henry) Haider of Melrose, Martha
Meyer of Meire Grove, Dorothy (John) Funk of New Munich, Ruth (Mark) Hartigan of Sauk Centre, Gary (Vivian) Imdieke of Dothan, Alabama, and Thomas (JoAnn) Imdieke  of Mounds View; son-in-law, Richard Christenson of Melrose; 39 grandchildren, 91 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren.

Jerome J. “Jerry” Timp

Jerome J. “Jerry” Timp, age 70 of Freeport, died Thursday, July 16, 2015, at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud. 

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 21 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport with Rev. Daniel Walz officiating. Interment was in the parish cemetery.

Jerome Joseph Timp was born May 9, 1945, in New Munich to Alphonse and Martha (Beuning) Timp. He was united in marriage to
Judith “Judy” Michael on Feb. 1, 1964, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport. Jerry worked as a welder and supervisor for nearly 30 years at D.C.I. and finished his career working at Scarince as a welder. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport. Jerry enjoyed fishing, golfing, going to the casino, and loved spending time with his family and friends.

Survivors include his children, Michael (Wanda)

Fernandez) Timp of Melrose; four grandchildren, Christopher, Dylan,

Jerry was preceded in death by his wife, Judy Timp on Sept. 14, 2010; parents; brother, Donald Timp; and sister-in-law, Jean “Jeanne” Timp.

Hildegard M. “Hilda” Theiler

Hildegard M. “Hilda” Theiler, age 91 of Melrose and formerly of Albany, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 20, 2015, at the CentraCare Health Center in Melrose, Minn.

 A Mass of Christian Burial was Thursday, July 23, at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany with Rev. Bradley Jenniges, O.S.B. officiating and Rev. Ken Thielman concelebrating. Interment was in the parish cemetery.

Hildegard Mary Theiler was born on March 18, 1924, in Melrose, Minn.,  to Herman, Sr. and Rosa (Steinemann) 

Hellermann. She grew up on the family farm bordering Lake Sylvia. On Sept. 21, 1943, she married Herman John Theiler at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose. They were dairy farmers in Sauk Centre, St. Augusta, and Roscoe until retiring and moving to Albany in 1987. She lived at CentraCare Health Center in Melrose for the last five years.

 Hilda was a member of the Seven Dolors Catholic Church, Mother of Mercy Auxiliary, Little Flower Mission Group, and the Albany Senior Citizens. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, reading, playing cards, fishing, gardening, and spending time with her family.

 She is survived by her children, Roger (Katie) Theiler of Richmond, Jeanette (Steve) Brinkman of Cold Spring, Gerald (Ginny) Theiler of Breckenridge, and Linda (Allen) Werke of Sartell; grandchildren, John Mackedanz, Cindy Bucher, Allen Mackedanz, Bonnie Linville, Fred Mackedanz, Nancy Hetzel, Tamara Theiler, Jennifer Kaminskie, Ashley Garding, Mike Theiler, Patrick Theiler, Julie Ochoa, and Tyler Werke; 19 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson; sister, Julianna Hollermann of Long Prairie and sister-in-law, Esther Theiler of Monticello.

 She is preceded in death by her husband, Herman on Oct. 16, 1993; infant daughter, Rose Mary on Jan. 14, 1947; her parents; brother, Herman Hellermann, Jr.; sisters, Frederika Hollermann and Elizabeth 

Pohlmann.

Serving as casket bearers were her grandchildren, John Mackedanz, Cindy Bucher, Allen Mackedanz, Bonnie Linville, Fred Mackedanz, Nancy Hetzel, Tamara Theiler, Jennifer Kaminskie, Ashley Garding, and Tyler Werke. Cross bearer was Rose Ann Inderrieden. Gift bearers were Jennifer Kaminskie and Ashley Garding. Readers were Carrie Werke and Tamara Theiler. Eulogy was by Cindy Bucher.

 A special thank you to the staff at Park View Center and Pine Villa Nursing Home in Melrose for the wonderful care given to Hilda for the five years she called these places her home.

Alcuin Joseph Leukam

  Alcuin Joseph Leukam, 87, of Melrose, died peacefully on Friday, Aug.  7, 2015, surrounded by his loving family, at the CentraCare Health Hospital in Melrose, Minn.

 A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Alcuin will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday Aug. 12 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove, Minn. Rev. Ken Thielman will be officiating with Rev. Marvin Enneking and Rev. Mark Willenbring concelebrating. Deacon Jim Schulzetenberg will be assisting. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.

Alcuin Joseph Leukam was born March 14, 1928, in Grove Township, Stearns County, Minn.,  to George and Rose (Berling) Leukam. He married Alice
Bertram on May 28, 1951, in St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Belgrade, Minn.  The couple farmed together and raised their family north of Meire Grove. Upon retirement in 1982, Alcuin and Alice moved to Melrose, and he worked part time providing custodial care at St. John’s-St. Andrew’s Catholic grade school in Meire Grove.  Later, he worked part time at Ernie’s Family Foods in Melrose.

 Alcuin was a lifelong member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Society and Knights of Columbus Council #1633. 

 Alcuin enjoyed Koinonia Retreats, playing cards, square dancing, snowmobiling, carpentry, gardening, fish fries, and telling jokes.

 Alcuin is survived by his children: Jim (Mary Kay) Leukam, Meire Grove; Gerry (Ann) Leukam, Maple Grove; Bonnie (Jim) Schulzetenberg, Greenwald; Laurie (Bruce) Engle, Sauk Centre; Char (Dan) Meyer, Meire Grove; Bob (Jan) Leukam, Melrose, his sister, Juliana Kettler, and by 21 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

 He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Alice in 1990, infant daughter Mary Alice in 1952, sister Eleanor Meyer, granddaughter Sarah Harkins and great-granddaughter Cecilia Harkins.

Serving as casket bearers will be Randy Pung, Marvin Leukam, Allen Meyer, Maynard Kettler, Roman Meyer, and Mike Pung. Cross bearer will be Jessica Rothmeyer and scripture bearer will be Ryan Meyer. Gift bearers will be Julie Schulzetenberg, Ashley Nelson,
Danielle Waltzing, and Mike Leukam. Reader will be Char Meyer. Eucharistic Minister will be Dan Meyer. Mass servers will be Deacon Jim Schulzetenberg and
Deacon Ernie Kociemba. Honorary bearers will be the St. Joseph’s Society.

Alvina A. Brang, age 100, of Meire Grove, died peacefully on Tuesday, Aug.18, 2015, surrounded by her loving family, at the CentreCare Nursing Home in Melrose. 

A Mass of Christian was held Saturday, Aug. 22, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Alvina Ann Zenzen was born Aug. 29, 1914, in Elrosa to Joseph and Anna (Tschida) Zenzen. She attended Catholic School in Meire Grove through 8th grade. After school, she took care of the neighborhood children by cooking and cleaning for their families before moving to the Twin Cities where she worked as a nanny for $1 per week. She returned to Meire Grove and married Alphonse Brang on June 1, 1937, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Meire Grove. The couple farmed between Melrose and Meire Grove for over 35 years. She enjoyed quilting, gardening, cooking, card playing (especially 500), and traveling. 

 Alvina was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church where she was a member of the choir. She was also a member of Holy Rosary Society and St. Mary’s Society.

Alvina is survived by her children, Corrine (Ralph) Blenker of Albany, Robert (Carol) Brang of Maple Grove, Marjorie (Gerald) Koopmeiners of Melrose, and David (Ann) Brang of Melrose; 21 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Alphonse on Feb. 18, 1999; brothers and sisters, Andrew,
Edward, and Clarence Zenzen, Mary Winning, Theresa Messer, Ann Bruce, Clara Pajewski, Veronica Kleve, Alma Welle, and Betty Hewitt. 

Serving as casket bearers were Ryan Blenker, Corey Blenker, Paul Koopmeiners, Joel Koopmeiners, Marty Brang, Peter Brang, Mitch Petrie, and Tom Lieser. Cross bearer was Barbara Wehlage and scripture bearer was Kristin Petrie. Honorary bearers were the St. Mary’s Society.

Dorien T. Revermann

 Dorien T. Revermann, age 91, of New Munich, died peacefully on Sunday, Aug. 16, 2015, surrounded by her family at her Mother of Mercy Assisted Living apartment in Albany.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 21, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich with Rev. Daniel Walz officiating. Interment was in the parish cemetery.

Dorien Theresa
Olmscheid was born April 19, 1924, in St. Martin Township, Stearns County to Edward and Susan (Mayers) Olmscheid. On June 8, 1943, she married Aloys Revermann at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich. They farmed in St. Martin Township for almost 40 years. Dorien also worked as a cook at the New Munich Elementary, Melrose Junior High, and Melrose Senior High Schools. She enjoyed playing cards (especially Schoff’s Kup), quilting, crocheting, embroidering, baking, canning, playing BINGO, going to casinos, and bowling. She loved family get togethers and spending quality time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her suitcase was always packed and ready to go. 

Dorien was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Christian Women, and Catholic United Financial.

Survivors include her children, Gerald (Darlene) Revermann of New Munich, Mary (Wally) Stang of St. Cloud, Jim (Mary Jane) Revermann of New Munich, Steve (Pam) Revermann of St. Martin, Mike (Pam) Revermann of New Munich, Chuck (Lynne) Revermann of Melrose, Ruth (Duane) Moscho of Spring Hill, Alice (Ron) Doll of New Munich, Paul (Theresa) Revermann of St. Cloud, Lois (Ken) Stang of Richmond, and Shelly (Tom) Wenker of Melrose; 48 grandchildren and 70 great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Rita Revermann of Albany; son-in-law, Virgil Schleper of St. Martin; brothers and sisters, Leo Olmscheid of New Munich, Leroy (Phyllis)
Olmscheid of St. Cloud, Dorothy Rademacher of New Munich; and brother-in-law, Al Hiltner of Melrose.

Dorien was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Aloys Revermann; daughter, Pat Schleper; son, Kenneth Revermann; sisters, Marion VanDrehle,
Betty Lou Spaeth, and Donna Mae Hiltner; brother, Jerome Olmscheid; sisters-in-law, Lorraine Olmscheid and Viola Olmscheid; and brother-in-law, Ralph Rademacher.

Serving as casket bearers were Tom Revermann, Dale Schleper, Eric Revermann, Jamie Revermann, Ross Revermann, Ben Revermann, Brent Revermann, Chris Moscho, Craig Doll, Isaac Revermann, and Mason Wenker. Cross bearer was Eddie Wenker and scripture bearer was Lisa Stang. Mass servers were Courtney Stang and Devin Stang. Eucharistic Ministers were Rita Revermann, Tracy Berscheit, and Jenny Revermann. Honorary bearers were Dorien’s granddaughters. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.

George J. Schmidt

A funeral service for George Schmidt, age 94, of Milford and Spencer, was held Thursday, Aug. 20, 2015, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Milford. Burial was at Calvary Cemetery.

George Joseph Schmidt was born Aug. 10, 1921, in Melrose, the son of Frank and Christine (Kraker) Schmidt. He was raised and educated in Melrose, graduating from Melrose High School. He continued his education at the University of Minnesota.

George entered the US Army Air Corps. on July 10, 1942, serving during WWII as a B17 pilot as well as instructed students on B29 procedures. He was Honorably Discharged on Nov. 26, 1945, as a 2nd Lieutenant.

George was united in marriage to his schoolmate, Dolores Herges, on Oct. 11, 1947. The couple made their home in Melrose, where George owned Schmidt Implement with his brother. After the sale of their implement business in 1957, George purchased a Farm Fleet store in Oskaloosa, Iowa, moving to St. Cloud in 1960 to serve as President of Fleet Supply. George and Dolores moved to Spencer in 1966 to start their first of many Shopper’s Supply Stores.

George was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Milford, Iowa. He was also a member of American Legion Post #1 in Spencer, Iowa and the Knights of Columbus.

George passed away Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2015, at St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer, Iowa at ninety-four years of age.

He is survived by his wife of sixty-seven years, Dolores; sons, Chuck Schmidt (Patricia),
of Spencer, and Jim Schmidt (Ginger) of West Okoboji; grandchildren, Jessie, Tyler, Holly (Brian) Holum and Nate (Brea); four great-grandchildren, sisters, Sister Mary Corrine Schmidt and Corrine Finnegan; other family and many friends.

He was preceded in death by parents Frank and Christine, sister, Mary Kay Panow and brother Frank Schmidt, Jr.

Turner Jenness Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Colette E. Von Wahlde

Colette E. Von Wahlde, age 101 of Melrose, died peacefully on Thursday, Aug. 20, 2015, at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Melrose.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 24 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating and Rev. Ken Thielman and Rev. Vincent Lieser concelebrating.  Interment was in the parish cemetery.

Colette Elizabeth Hinnenkamp was born Jan. 25, 1914, in Melrose Township, Stearns County, Minnesota, to Bernard and Mary (Angelbeck) Hinnenkamp. On June 1, 1932, she married Henry Von Wahlde at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose. The couple farmed in Melrose Township until retiring in 1979. Since October of 2006 she had resided at Pine Villa Care Center in Melrose.

She was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose, Christian Mothers, and the Women’s Catholic Order of Foresters. Colette enjoyed gardening, flowers, baking, canning food, playing cards, hunting, fishing, and snowmobiling.

Survivors include her children, Jerome (Elvera) Von Wahlde of Melrose, Bob (Pat) Von Wahlde of Melrose, and Delores (Melvin) Gerads of Upsala; 16 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren, and 26 great-great grandchildren; and sisters, Irma Otte of Sauk Centre and Bernadine Winter of Greenwald.

Colette was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Von Wahlde
on Dec. 21, 2006; great-great-granddaughter, Addison Wensman; brothers and sisters, Letvina Brake, Robert Hinnenkamp, Clarence Hinnenkamp, Isidor Hinnenkamp, Herbert Hinnenkamp, Theckla Blenker, and Bernard Hinnenkamp. 

Serving as casket bearers were Judy Pundsack, Gail Hommerding, Mary Scherping, Debbie
Engelmeyer, Sharon Roering and Linda
Cichon. Cross bearer was Kristi Curtis and scripture bearer was Kristin Pflipsen. Gift bearers were Melinda Wensman and Wendy Tschida.

James “Jim” V. Wimmer

James “Jim” V. Wimmer, age 71 of Albany, passed away at home on Aug. 21, 2015, surrounded by family. A public gathering in memory of Jim was held Friday, Aug. 28, at Seven Dolors Church in Albany. Funeral service to be private. Arrangements are being made with Miller-Carlin Funeral Home, Albany.

Born in Melrose on Nov. 9, 1943, to Joe and Eleanor Wimmer, Jim graduated from Albany High School in 1961. He served in the U. S. Army Reserve from 1962 to 1968. Jim successfully operated a second generation dairy farm outside of Albany. Once retired from farming, Jim enjoyed part-time employment with Kozy Kab, where he made many friends while driving elderly and disabled clients to medical appointments. Jim was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Family was the focal point of his life.

In his free time, Jim was an avid fisherman who spent summers angling Lake Edward and winters spear fishing a secret hot spot. He was also a skilled card player and sportsman who never let facts get in the way of a good story. 

He is survived by the love of his life, Joyce (Welle) Wimmer, whom he married in 1964; six children Juli Mader (Paul) of St. Cloud, Amy
Wimmer (Steve Kennedy) of Edina, Peter Wimmer (Teresa) of Albany, Maria
Wimmer of Carbondale Colo., Sarah Koshiol (Chad) of Minneapolis, Susan Pauling (Billy) of Eden Prairie; along with twelve grandchildren, Josh, Ashley, and Nick Mader; Norah Kennedy; Nathan, Hailey, Henry, and Gretchen Wimmer; Presley, Pearse, and Parker Pauling; Harris Koshiol. He is also survived by his siblings Charles (Pat) Wimmer, Menomonee, Wis.;
Barbara Hofmann, Laramie, Wyo.; John (Joyce) Wimmer, Richmond; Mary Jo Downing, Hartland, Wis.; and his loyal labrador retriever, Lady. 

Jim is preceded in death by his daughter, Carla Wimmer and parents, Joe and Eleanor Wimmer and in-laws Adalbert and Appolonia Welle.

Melvin M. Worms

Melvin M. Worms, age 92 of Melrose, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2015, at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, Aug. 29 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Interment was in the parish cemetery.

Melvin Mathew Worms was born June 21, 1923, in Spring Hill Township, Stearns County, Minnesota, to Lambert and Agnes (Ellering)
Worms. He attended country school through the eighth grade and graduated from Melrose High School in 1941.  On  Oct. 8, 1951, he married Edna Wenker at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Greenwald. Melvin was a hard-working dedicated farmer who spent his entire life working on their third generation century farm in Spring Hill Township.

He was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose, St. Joseph’s Men’s Society in Greenwald, and the Knights of Columbus Council #1633. Throughout his life, Melvin enjoyed deer hunting, bowling, ice fishing and playing cards,  especially Solo. Melvin was a fan of the professional Minnesota sports teams including the Twins, Vikings, Timberwolves, and occasionally watched the Minnesota Wild, but his greatest joy in life was spending time with his children and grandchildren.

 Survivors include his loving wife of 63 years, Edna Worms of Melrose; children, Donald
(Marina) Worms of Hercules, Calif., Harvey (Janet) Worms of Eden Prairie, Diane Worms of Farmington, Joann (Russ) Olson of Breckenridge, Rosie (Tim)  Beier of Paynesville, Lisa (Dave) Sarne of Eagan, and Jon (Laurie) Worms of Greenwald; 15 grandchildren, Nathalia (Daniel), Philip (Natalia), Sarah, Matthew, Mariah, Chad, Eric, Chris (Annie), Emily, Stephanie, Tony, Jessie, Michaela, Madison and Carter; and two great-grandchildren, Naya and Mateo; and brother, Ray Worms of Melrose.

Melvin was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Herbert,
Luverne, and Leonard
Worms; and sisters,
Lorraine Imdieke and Bernice Athmann.

Serving as casket bearers were Philip Worms, Matthew Worms, Chad Olson, Eric Olson, Chris Beier and Tony Sarne. Cross bearer was Madison Worms and scripture bearer was Jessie Sarne.

Catherine “Katie” D. Bromen

Catherine “Katie” D.  Bromen, age 95 of Sauk Centre, died peacefully surrounded by her family Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2015, at CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Sauk Centre.

A funeral service was held Monday, Aug. 31, at the Episcopal Church of the Good Samaritan in Sauk Centre with The Rev. Roger Phillips presiding. Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery. 

 Catherine Dahlem was born July 4, 1920, at home in Sauk Centre, the daughter of August and Meta (Andersen) Dahlem. She lived in the same home and slept in the same bedroom for 84 years. On April 18, 1945, she traveled to New York, N.Y., and was united in marriage to Alex L. Bromen in St. John’s Cathedral. The couple lived in the Dahlem home in Sauk Centre and raised  their family of five children.  Katie had a 35 year career with Northwestern Bell Telephone Company, beginning as an Operator and later working as a Customer Service Representative.  She was very proud to be the last surviving grandchild of Albert Dahlem,  a pioneer who came to Sauk Centre in 1868.  

 Katie was very involved in Sauk Centre.  She was a member of The Episcopal Church of the Good Samaritan, Sinclair Lewis Foundation, Sauk Centre Area Historical Society, Sauk Centre Area Chamber  of Commerce, the American Legion Post 67 and Paul F. Donart VFW Post 2853 Auxiliaries, as well as the Telephone Pioneers.  

Survivors include her children, Alex R. “Bob” Bromen (Mary Winkler)
of Olympia, Wash., Don (Pam) Bromen of Stillwater, Bill Bromen of Sauk Centre, Cathy (Rick) Arendt of Seattle, Wash., and Joann “Joni”  (Tom) Maleska of Melrose; six grandchildren, Beth (Tom) Lemen, Matt (Colleen) Bromen, Nick Bromen, Paul Bromen, Paige Bromen (fiancé, Adam McCullough) and Brian Arendt; four great grandchildren, Luke
Lemen, Will Lemen, Claire Bromen, and
Charley Bromen.  

Katie was preceded in death by her husband, Alex, on Oct. 13, 2003; parents, August and Meta Dahlem; and her brother, Willis Dahlem.

Serving as casket bearers were Matt Bromen, Paul Bromen, Paige Bromen, Adam McCullough, Brian
Arendt and Tom Maleska.

Herman H. Petermeier

  Herman H. Petermeier,
age 107 years and 6 months, of Freeport, died Sunday, Sept. 6, 2015, at the Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany. Herman died as the result of a fall, not his age. 

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Thursday, Sept. 10 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport with Rev. Virgil Petermeier, osc officiating and Rev. Dan Walz concelebrating. Interment  was in the parish cemetery.

Herman Henry
Petermeier was born Feb. 18, 1908, in Millwood Township, Stearns County, to Benedict and Mary (Kemper) Petermeier. On Sept. 24, 1935, he married Mary Westendorf at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose. The couple farmed north of Freeport for 40 years before moving to town.
Herman called his farm the “Evergreen Farm” and planted hundreds of evergreens, apple, plum, and other types of trees. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport. 

 Herman enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping, and bee keeping. He also enjoyed fishing trips with his five sons to Canada and trips to Hawaii with his wife, Mary. 

 Survivors include his eight children, Jerry (Marge) Petermeier of Grand Rapids, Ben (Mary) Petermeier of Grey Eagle, Ray Petermeier of Galveston, Ind., Don Petermeier of Melrose, Arlene (Arian)
Knops of Bruce,  Wis.,  Charles Petermeier of Santa Fe, N. Mex., Susan
(Miles) Wagner of Honolulu, Hawaii, and Nona (Vince) Johnson
of Maplewood; 27 grandchildren, 38 great-
grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren.

 Herman was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Petermeier; infant son, Boniface Petermeier; daughter-in-law, Shirley
Petermeier; brother and sister-in-law, Ed and
Loretta Petermeier.

A special thank you to the staff at Mother of Mercy Nursing Home and CHI Home Health and Hospice of Albany for the excellent care they gave Herman. 

 Serving as casket bearers were Jerry, Ben, Ray, Don, Charles, and Brian Petermeier. Cross bearer was Nona Johnson and scripture bearer was Pam Stull.

Arnold R. Rohe

Arnold R. Rode, Jr., 55, of New Hope, Minn., formerly of Greenwald and a Melrose graduate,  passed away on Sept.  4, 2015,  after a courageous fight against multiple long term complications due to Juvenile Diabetes. 

A memorial service will be held Thursday, Sept. 24, with a 6 p.m. visitation  and 7 p.m. service at New Hope Church, 4225 Gettysburg Ave. N. in New Hope.

Arnold was loved by those who knew him. 

He is survived by wife, Tari (Ogle); sons, Arnold Rode III and James (Amy) Rode; grandson, Liam Rode; father, Arnold Sr.; mother, Claudia;    and sisters  Regina, Vicky and Julie; and many other relatives as well as friends.

Memorials preferred to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.
